Reading Bear - IRA website #7

Reading Bear (https://www.readingbear.org) is a free, web-based program for learning to read. This program helps beginner readers with vocabulary and concepts while introducing all the main phonetic patterns of written English. This website makes reading words interesting and fun through the activities. The website’s online reading activities are easy to follow, self-paced and fun and engaging for young children. This website gives young children between the ages four through seven the opportunity to start getting prepared for the same structured learning that they will need to succeed when they start school to additional support as they continue their journey in education.
Reading Bear can be played as a video or as in interactive slide show. The child will be introduce to a few phonic rules and then you can click on an activity. The presentation starts with the speaker sounding out the word slowly and then quickly. What is great about this activity is that the letters are highlighted as the speaker is saying each sound. Then speaker will blend it and read the word. After the presenter has read the word a picture will be displayed for that word and then the word will be used in a sentence. Children are not only learning phonics but building on their vocabulary and background knowledge.
Reading Bear can be accessed on computers or tablets but not smart phones. It is free to play but if you do register, which is also free, the program will track student progress and save a student’s place in the lessons. Parents or teachers can create their own account and keep track of student progress.
Reading Bear is an amazing website to help build on early literacy skills. This website gives parents the opportunity to help their child get prepared for literacy skills that will be learned when they start school and throughout their primary years. This website can also be a great resource for any student in my classroom who are struggling with blending and reading words.
